Lime in Environmental Remediation

Environmental remediation includes a multitude of lime applications. The following applications illustrate a few examples of the use of lime as the reagent of choice when responding to environmental problems.

Lime treatment is a cost effective reagent to treat animal wastes, particularly as the feed lot industry consolidates and builds concentrated feeding operations producing large amounts of animal waste.

Lime can be used for effective treatment of sewage biosolids, including municipal wastewater, as well as industrial sludges, petroleum wastes and acidic drainage from active or abandoned minesites.

Lime is commonly used for the removal of acidic gases, particularly sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl). In fact, over ninety percent of U.S. flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems use lime or limestone control technologies. Lime-based technology is also being used to remove sulfur trioxide (SO3), fine particulates and mercury.

Lime is employed to treat hazardous wastes. Lime stabilizes most metals by converting them to more chemically stable forms that are less likely to leach. In addition, when added to soil, lime can be a very effective way to solidify material and prevent future discharge of hazardous wastes.

There are many applications for lime in environmental remediation projects. Please feel welcome to contact a Graymont representative with any questions regarding the use of lime in these types of processes.
