June 28, 2006 - Sacramento, California
On June 20, over 150 public and private sector construction
engineers and professionals met at the Radisson Hotel in
Sacramento for an intensive half day seminar on the use of lime
in soil stabilization projects. The event which was hosted by
Graymont and Western Stabilization included three industry
specialists to address three areas of interest.
Dallas N. Little, Ph. D., P.E. from Texas A&M University is an
expert in the use of lime in soil stabilization. He spoke on the
scientific and technical aspects of using lime, and how and why it
is a technique of choice for many different stabilization situations.
David Levin, of David Levin & Associates discussed important
safety issues involving both the equipment and the lime product
itself, and the importance of training and legal requirements.
Jeff Short of Krazan & Associates covered the topic of quality
control and the how-to's of testing and interpreting test results in
the field.
Comments from the attendees were very positive; the information
provided enhanced and supported the current practices of many
and in other cases strong incentive to include the lime procedure
in future stabilization projects. Sixty three percent of those attending
already use lime in 50% or more of their projects, and of
all attendees, 25% felt they would increase the use of lime in stabilization
projects as a result of the information gained at this
seminar.
Following are some of the comments from the attendees when
asked if they would be increasing their use of lime in soil stabilization
projects:
- "Yes - The information provided proves even more effective results."
- "Yes - Lime in soil stabilization is more cost effective than the current remove and replace practices."
- "Yes - We will save time and money when working in clay soils."
- "Yes - I now have a better understanding of lime and its use."
- "Yes - Because of the significant amount of unstable clay materials in our area."
- "Yes - We recommend the use, especially in the winter months to accelerate the schedule."
- “Yes - Depending on the soil - it's more cost effective."
- "Being better educated on the product allows us to better offer recommendations to clients."
